This article focuses on the numerical variation of municipalities during the 70-year history of the Italian Republic, from 1946 to 2016, using as institutional source the General Census of the population. Moreover, a focus on small municipalities up to 5,000 inhabitants and a study on intermunicipal mergers are provided.
