The paper reconstructs several innovative programmes typical of Italian philosophy in the 1950s, focusing on the cases of the University of Pavia and the University of Turin. According to the author those programmes abandoned the recent tradition of historicism and idealism, but maintained their continuity with the long standing tradition where the image of the philosopher as a public intellectual character and the philosophical discourse as civil discourse played outstanding roles.
