Following ‘the creative city’ and ‘the sustainable city’, ‘the smart city’ is the latest buzzword used to refer to a fashionable urban imaginary. It basically refers to the production and/or restructuring of urban spaces according to the logics of sustainability through the implementation of Icts, and it represents an idea of urban development that has recently gained a wide appraisal and support as several local governments in Italy and overseas are implementing ‘smart’ strategies to remake their cities’ fabrics. The aim of this short essay is to highlight some of the potentially controversial aspects associated with this idea of urban development. The paper starts with offering an overview of recent theoretical debates on the ‘smart city’; it then points to some of the main issues that scholars in the field of territorial studies should carefully address. Finally, the paper offers a re-flection on the interrelation between projects of eco-technological restructuring and economic crises, suggesting the potential emergence of a new phase in the evolution of urban neoliberalism.
