The article is built around the theme of commons, rights that local communities have always collectively exercised on their territories to draw livelihood. Though they still represent a substantial common patrimony, in the last two centuries their surface was reduced to a tenth. The lack of knowledge on the extent of this phenomenon is also due to the fact that collective properties, usually located in marginal areas (hills or mountains), are of little interest to the dominant economic model. However, in this time of crisis a new interest emerges in an ownership model that, characterised the three basic principles of inalienable assets, self-management of territories by the settled communities and withdrawal of resources not exceeding what nature can renew every year, becomes emblematic of what should be a proper relationship between man and natural environment, for the re-establishment of an economic system more fair and durable. Retracing the legislative context in which they are located and analysing two concrete examples, the text then emphasizes the importance of census surveys and mapping of all the common lands in order to be able to defend their survival.
