The article proposes the interpretation of some urban episodes as signals of a possible redemption of the city itself, beyond the vast extension and the extreme differentiation of contemporary urban phenomena. The abandon of cities, concrete or metaphoric, in search for simpler and more sustainable configurations, most of times leads towards a communitarian perspective, enclosed and aridly exclusive; In parallel to the previous, on the other hand, new ‘light’ cooperative phenomena start to develop; those phenomena, through prevalently elective mechanisms, induce a counter-movement – pragmatic and non-exclusive – back to the previous places and configures a community not resting on a stable set of values but on the repayment of a reciprocal debt. This form of life in common – which is at the same time the tool used by those experiences and the horizon they aim to – is the core of the urban character, its eminently political quality. Taking care of it represents an occasion of redemption for the city because, as demonstrated by facts, for the same city means taking care of itself (of its immediate needs and of its interests). It has still to be investigated who are the main actors of this story and to which extent it could represent an opportunity for dem-ocratic growth, or how it could become so.
