In the recent years the planning discipline has begun to employ ecological rationality in planning cities and has therefore introduced measures to include natural functions within the urban environment. Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, Spain) stands out in this context as a city with a long history in the search for a balanced relationship between the city and the environment. It has achieved international recognition being awarded as European Green Capital in 2012. In addition to its proven track record, its geographic location in southern Europe makes it unique, far from the best known examples of northern countries. Thirdly, the possibilities it offers as a medium scale city for the inclusion of measures of environmental improvement and ecological connectivity make Vitoria-Gasteiz a case study of interest. The analysis and assessment of the case of Vitoria-Gasteiz is performed in order to draw a number of conclusions that provide a reference to other cities when considering objectives in the field of ecological planning and the inclusion of green infrastructure as tools for it. This article analyzes the inclusion of ecological functions and improving the quality of life in the city of Vitoria through the connection with the natural environment by means of peri-urban green belts, creating a network of multifunctional green spaces in the city and adaptation and mitigation of the consequences of climate change.
