The paper presents and interprets the first annual report on the three-years study “Reutilizing Italy”, sponsored by WWF with several scientific and academic groups of  urban planning, engineering, architecture and sociology. It addresses issues currently evident in society more than within the discipline (soil over-consumption, impacts, degradation, de-territorialisation, waste of built heritage) to test the potential for reuse of the huge ‘heritage’, product of urbanization in our country, intertwining different levels of analysis and of urban and environmental policies. The search starts prospecting some typological categories of abandoned or severely underutilized urban contexts, to match them to as many categories of reuse, arising from the direct observation of the involved areas as well as from their classification in the relevant territories, shaping the national landscape. From this we derive issues and themes, specific and general, whose management is analyzed in the context of territorial and urban governance actions. The different observation scales adopted therefore permit to check the innovation and efficiency levels in the strategies of the different Regions about reusing built-up areas; but they also allow a reading of the incidence of certain disciplinary research with respect to their ability to push sustainability in the re-territorialisation policies they suggest.
