This paper investigates a case study on co-housing considered as a living practice based on participation and elective neighbourhood, and on the potential and actual transformative impact on the analysed urban context: the co-housing experience in Porta Palazzo, a district in Turin, Italy. Specifically, the paper aims at interpreting the possibility of applying Ivan Illich’s category of “conviviality” to this kind of experience, born in a context which is critical towards consumerism and economic growth. Considering this basic cultural framework, the analysis focuses its attention on how the micro-relational and networking relations experimented by the co-housers, in order to encourage transformative dynamics and spread social capital inside the Porta Palazzo neighbour-hood, are effective in promoting a wider social cohesion together with convivial practices and living forms.
