LSP is a research/action project that gave start to a practical experiment, in Bologna, in September 2010. The project aims at triggering the growth of a collective imaginary shared by the residents of the street neighbourhoods, considered as the minimal extension unit of the public sphere, with the purpose of making local social actors able to self-organize and self-direct. In this view it facilitates the creation of moments of coexistence in shared spaces through the use of urban planning instruments, which implies the constant need to intersect points of view and actions of several disciplines in the creation of a network of small squares-workshops for the neighbourhood participatory design, spaces that may change from temporary to permanent, obtained in the smallest spaces along urban streets. Each micro-square is both a shared space and a tool for the residents’ social activation and participation in the street life; it is a space for meeting and collective design, which itself may become the subject of. The small square facilitates the meeting, contextual knowledge, the habit of sharing, cooperating and co-designing as well as implementing projects; for the residents it represents an opportunity to practice collective empowerment in order to improve their way of life in a neighbourhood context. The paper outlines the main axes of the process, leav-ing its full narrative to future writings.
