The public space crisis is one of the signals of the distance between citizens and their habitat. In front of this situation, some authors underline the existence of a demand of commons as a possible solution. The paper questions about the existence and the features of urban spatial commons, the ‘comunanze urbane’. The discussion starts from a research of urban spaces that can figure as commons in the historical city, then some elements coming from the literature on commons are presented. These elements are tested with respect to some practices of space re-appropriation managed by citizens, in order to sketch a conceptual grid of seven features. The grid is useful both to identify the ‘comunanze urbane’ and to indicate some exportable guidelines for creating and sharing urban spaces. Such spaces can be places where new social and cooperative relationships among citizens and public administrations are experimented.
