After the medical period of Galien, Salerne represents during eight centuries the center of the European medical knowledge. Since the IX century, medicine is practiced and teached in Salerno. Federico II, with the foundation of the Medical School, regulates the studies of Medicine and the practice of surgery. Petrocello and Ruggero Frugardo are the most important surgeons of the school of Salerno, which contributed to the formation of important French surgeons, as Gilles de Corbeil, Arnaud de Villeneuve, Henri de Mondeville and Guy de Chauliac.
