This article focuses on a part of the wide debate in the 1830s about the removal of the hospital of S. Maria Nuova from the centre of the city of Florence. Administrators, doctors, hygienists, as well as architects and administrators were all involved. This paper, based on archival documents, re-examines Giuseppe Martelli’s project for the re-building of the hospital on the outskirts of Florence in discussion with a number of professionals and, speciifically with his friend Dr. Pietro Betti, the superintendent of S. Maria Nuova. The discussions engendered by Martelli’s project is one of a series debated in nineteenth-century Florence between modernism and tradition.
