177Although haemophilia and other haemorrhagic diseases have had a comparatively strong impact on popular imagination, they hardly attracted any philosophical attention. A few lines by Georges Canguilhem, out-of-date though not unperceptive, are virtually the only exception. The article presents a tentative outline of the philosophical status of this group of diseases, venturing an ontological characterization by way of comparing clinical categories to the patient’s knowledge that emerges from the illness experience. As a result, a multi-layered ontology comes to the fore, including inescapably idiographic features together with a temporal evolution which tends to restart periodically, in partial contrast to other chronic ilnesses.
