Olive-yards are a peculiar element of Italian landscape and contribute to the hydrological stability of hilly areas. The reform of the CMO for olive oil, decoupling policy support from production, could cause some farmers to abandon olive production. This topic is investigated by analysing the economic budgets of a sample of farms located in Tuscany for a total of 529 observations under post-reform conditions. Decoupling increases the number of farms that have better economic results by abandoning production even if this increase is expected to be very limited in the short-run. Cross-compliance constraints considerably reduce the abandonment of olive production but it is important to avoid that they can be circumvented.
