The author aims to clarify the methods and purposes of analytical legal philosophy. In particular, after briefly setting out a number of traditional tools for the logical analysis of language, the author draws upon two (non-alternative) research projects in legal philosophy: first, the analysis of jurists' (and judges') language and reasoning; second, the construction of concepts suitable for describing the law. The paper ends with two examples of both kinds of legal-philosophical work.
