Fabio Rosa (1687-1753) underBenedictus XIV reached the positionof computista dei Sacri Palazzi,i.e. accountant of the Pope. Rosaplayed also a role in the history ofart: being son of the academicpainter Francesco Rosa, he washighly esteemed for his painting collection. The collection was made of510 pieces, some hung in via Paolina, some others in a vigna close toPorta Salaria. Quite surprisingly, oldmasters played a minor role in theensemble: in fact, most of the pictureswere painted by modern masters.Rosa held pictures of historypainters such as Carlo Maratti,Benedetto Luti and Francesco Trevisani;his true passion, anyway, liedon classical landscapes and particularlyon those by Jan Frans van Bloemen, named Orizzonte. Fabio Rosa'slove for classical landscapes reflectsAccademia di San Luca's gradualappreciation of the 'genre painting'and of classical landscape itself, which took off in the second half onthe XVIIth century and boosted inthe first half of the XVIIIth. In fact,Rosa was connected to the Accademia:he was buried in the church ofSS. Luca and Martina and left to theAccademia a wide anthology of hispicture collection, selected by hisfriend Placido Costanzi. One mightwell suppose that his taste andacquisitions were influenced bysome members of the Accademia, such as for instance the sameCostanzi. Thanks to Fabio Rosa, theAccademia might be looked asRome's main museum for contemporaryart, thus becoming the thirdcentre of a 'museum system' formedalso by the Musei Capitolini forantique pieces and the PinacotecaCapitolina for old masters paintings. This system, probably conceivedaround 1750 by Silvio Valenti Gonzagaand Giovanni Paolo Panini, gave to the Accademia a key positionin the art market. Its effectivnessin shaping grand tourists's tastemight be revealed in BrownlowCecil's and Thomas Coke's choices.
