According to previous research, improvements in maternal and infant health care will be reflected in reduced crime rates a generation later. This hypothesis was tested by examining relationship between infant mortality rates and lagged rates of homicide (20 years later), controlling for gross domestic product in 94 Italian provinces. The variables were recorded at three points in time: in the mid-Seventies, in the mid-Eighties and in the mid-Nineties. Results are compatible with the above-mentioned "nurturance" hypothesis.
