The article aims to reconstruct and historicise the debate on precarious work, offering a possible periodisation. By focusing on the norm/exception binomial, the study deconstructs the Western concept of the "standard employment model" and addresses precarious work in its multiple historical and contemporary forms. More specifically, the first part examines the emergence of the concept of precarious work in the history of industrial capitalism, with reference to Italian and international literature. The second reconstructs the invention of the "standard employment model" between Fordism and post-Fordism and its implications for the study of precarity, while the third focuses on the "rediscovery" of precarious work in post-industrial societies. The fourth and final part considers precarity as the norm of contemporary global capitalism, highlighting the centrality of feminist and postcolonial studies
