In this comparative history of enmity in Western Europe from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century, Stuart Carroll challenges the prevailing view that the growth of state-built governmental apparatuses caused a decline in the rate of violence in 16th- and 17th-century societies. He also argues that the concept of enmity provides a better conceptual tool than terms such as feud or vendetta for understanding the role of conflict in shaping social relations
