In the interest presently aroused by the problems of regional cooperation, the article points out the U.S. experience in the Appalachian Region. The ARC (Appalachian Regional Commission) - composed of the governors of the 13 states that comprise Appalachia, and a federal cochairman appointed by the President - represents a unique experiment in cooperative deve- lopment and in federal-state coordination, a unique partnership of federal, state and local government, to establish, through a joint effort, regional priorities and programs for regional investments
