The Author examines Article 86 of the Italian Constitution comparing the procedures followed in formalizing the resignations of the Hon. SEGNI (1964) and of Senator LEONE (1978) from the office of President of the Republic. Particular attention is given to the institutions of substitution and of prorogatio as well as the differences (both substantial and formal) between the hypotheses of impediment and resignation
