71The renegotiation of the Lomé Treaty between the E.E.C. and the 57 African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries has provided a forum of de bate and confrontation between the parties, concerned over the issue of a human rights clause, advocated by the E.E.C., in response to the demands of its public opinion, but rejected by the A.C.P. Countries, as a dangerous means of cultural and political European interference in their domestic affairs. Several statements, notes and declarations were issued, at various levels and on different occasions, where mutual alle gations of human rights violations were exchanged, that might endanger the spirit of Lomé and the very signature of the treaty itself, quite a relevant document in the perspective of a New International Economic Order. Gains in the field human rights can be made only by means of mutual economic co-operation and yet some scope for further progress in the expected direction of a more human and global cooperation to deve lopment seems to have been achieved
