The paper aims to offer a comprehensive reflection on the last years of Carlo Crivelli’s activity, between about 1480 and 1495, which took place mainly in the Apennine area of the Marche, in Camerino and in the main cities of the da Varano duchy. Although progres-sively placed at the center of the specialized studies of the last twenty years, this period still does not appear to have been fully investigated, while it is essential for the full understand-ing of Crivelli’s artistic figure and his social rise, culminating with his acquisition of the title of knight, which, here, we propose to date precisely to early January 1490. Availing also of unpublished documents, we focus on the works made by the Venetian master for Fabriano and Matelica between 1490 and 1494 of which we will clarify aspects related to patronage, context of execution, and carpentry. In particular, the contribution focuses on the vicissitudes of the Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Sebastian (1491, London, National Gallery) and its commissioner Oradea Becchetti and the altar-piece with the Coronation of the Virgin (1493, Milan, Pinacoteca di Brera), both from the church of S. Francesco in Fabriano.
