Female genital mutilation constitutes a serious violation of individual rights due to the persisting physical and psychological consequences that it entails. In the last few decades, the phenomenon has come to prominence in relation to the issue of granting international protection to its victims. The paper will highlight the legal elements that make it possible for female genital mutilation to be included among the reasons for granting refugee status, basing this exam on the main international legal acts and some recent national rulings in this field. This framework will be compared with European and national jurisprudence concerning any existing limits on the expulsion of women who have suffered (or are at risk of being subjected to) female genital mutilation, in order to highlight the positive elements but also the critical ones and to underline possible evolutions
