Montecatini Terme born at the end of 18th century is one of the first Italian and European tourist destinations to successfully propose a new and modern tourism industry. In this paper we analyze the evolution of tourism industry and tourism flows at local scale to identify the specialization processes and the transition phases. Montecatini Terme is an historical destination mature and highly specialized in hospitality, shopping and wellness. Observing the trend of the long history of tourist arrivals we distinguished three phases: the rise of mass tourism; the explosion of mass tourism; the era of maturity. Specialization based on the hotels, spas and on the hospitality culture in a high quality landscape.
