The present paper ponders – mainly through Theophrastus’ De sensibus – the encephalocentric and cardiocentric standpoints adopted by four “pre-Socraticµ philosophers, namely Alcmaeon of Croton and Diogenes of Apollonia, on the one hand, and Empedocles of Agrigentum and Philolaus of Croton on the other.
