The Neapolitan coastal street of Santa Lucia represented over the centuries the symbol of most lowly and populous town, necessary step of foreigners tourists attracted by the incessant bustle of fishermen and pedlars of macaroni, sulphurous water and seafood. In spite of the stereotypical image of places, literally frozen in time by innumerable painters and writers, this urban area was instead in continuous development, the most important connection between the city and the western suburb of Chiaia across the sixteenth century coastal fortifications. The distinctiveness of this place was in effect due to the hard cohabitation between military, commercial and tourist functions, definitively disappeared at the end of the nineteenth century because of the creation of the new middle-class neighborhood around the old street.
