Since the ’80s agritourism has become the most evident expression of rural tourism in Italy. Perhaps, at the beginning, the possibility of finding particularly cheap board and lodging has given a significant boost to the diffusion of this tourism. On the other hand, it should not be forgotten the decisive role played by policies in favour of the “multifunctionality” of farms. These policies have contributed to the success of agritourism, so that in the last decades rural accommodations in Italy have doubled. This paper, presented by the Research Department of Touring Club of Italy – association always involved in the promotion of tourism values and protection of national heritage and environment –, is intended to deepen the trends of this sector and point out the renewed attention to rural areas as “tourist object”.
