In the recent wave of outward FDI by Chinese firms, the automotive industry stands out as one of the sectors accounting for a relevant share of the total, with Europe being by far the favourite destination. We document the characteristics of these FDI by host country and business activity performed by affiliates. We describe the diverse strategies of major investing firms and provide an empirical analysis of the motivations for investing in Europe compared to competing locations worldwide. Our results suggest that the probability for Chinese auto firms to invest in the European auto industry is not driven by the traditional determinants of location choices of MNEs (host country’s ease of doing business, R&D expenditure, overall FDI attractiveness), nor by marketseeking motives. Instead, host country’s infrastructure positively and significantly affects the decision to invest in Europe. These results are the same for both auto makers and component suppliers investing in Europe, but the probability to invest in Europe is higher for components suppliers.
