The unsatisfactory results arising from the empirical literature on economic growth lead to look for better and more comprehensive definitions of capital taking account of human skills and social relationships. Everyone agrees that high educated people having good reciprocal relationships and a strong general interest for their own environment help the socio-economical development, nevertheless it is difficult to measure these concepts and correctly introduce them in a standard economic growth regression. This paper aims at summarizing the huge theoretical and empirical debate on the impact of human and social capital on economic growth. The critical approach adopted focuses the problems of definition, the methodogical issues and, finally, the possible relationships between these concepts.
