This paper develops an early warning system that can detect financial crises. It is based on a "signal" approach that monitors several indicators that tend to exhibit an unusual behaviour in the periods preceding a crisis. When an indicator cross a threshold, it issues a "signal" that the country is vulnerable to a currency crisis. The model gives rise to many false alarms, but nevertheless the performance of the indicators seems reasonably good.
