The article traces the emergence of the new Chilean cinema from the 1960s until the coup d’état of September 13, 1973, which forced filmmakers into exile and ended an entire movement that had revealed a social reality of backwardness and poverty hidden by the media. Linked to the new cinematic trends in other Latin American countries and to the activity of musicians, writers, and poets, Chilean filmmakers supported the politics of Unidad Popular with their documentaries and films characterized by innovative aesthetic forms. Also, they spoke out even more firmly from exile with the masterpieces of Littin, Ruiz, and Guzmán, which are now part of world cinema history
