223This reflection addresses the topic of intercultural mediation in Italian schools from a gender perspective. Though being as provably essential as beneficial for the smooth functioning of the school system, this service still awaits wider professional recognition. It is also a setting that testifies to a marked participation of women regardless of their origin and linguistic-cultural affiliation. The latter observation leads to the key question of this study: does intercultural mediation at school embody a job definable as “female”, or are we faced with yet another gender issue?
