This article looks at American covert operations in Eastern Europe in the context of an overall strategic vision pursued by the US administration in the early Cold War. The interpretation proposed here is that US strategy had a guideline, loosely identifiable with «containment», which however lacked one of the essential components of any strategic vision: an achievable final goal (defeating the USSR and ending the Cold War). Instead, the US applied a flexible approach that is particularly evident in the case of US covert intervention in Europe.
