The present essay aims to explore the relationship between Andrea Emo’s image theory and some key ideas at the basis of Western iconology. As a matter of fact, in aesthetics the philosopher summarizes the main points of his speculation, which are elaborated around the concept of negative image. This theory, although based on unique categories, seeks clarification and validation through the Platonic mimésis. Likewise, through Hegel and Nietzsche, Emo speculates on the «death of God» to reconfigure the notions of idolatry and iconoclasm, reinterpreting the meanings assigned to them by the Second Council of Nicaea and the theological iconology of Christianity
