The paper is the result of an experimental multidisciplinary dialogue between geography and media studies, starting from the observation of some particular examples f local independent film production. The aim is to underline the distinctive traits of a camera-mediated encounter with Otherness. First, a geographical analysis of Salento is conducted, to point out the impacts that migration flows have – especially on the urban context. A critical approach is then used given its ability to offer a number of tools to investigate the territory as a dynamic space. Lastly, a perspective of film studies is introduced, and examples of audiovisual production made in Salento will be presented. These will focus on how the environment and landscape has been interpreted within cinematography and how particular territorial features have fostered the birth and consolidation of local production.
