The testing effect consists in an improvement of long-term learning due to the use of tests and questionnaires in the study phase, which leads to greater advantages in remembering compared to standard study or rereading practice. The present review aims to discuss the most important studies on the «testing effect» which have highlighted the worth of the practice of the test as an effective learning tool. A theoretical explanation of the cognitive processes underlying the testing effect is needed to develop adequate educational practices.
