Starting from the analysis of the different etymologies of the term contrition, the theme of penitential contrition is explored, considering it in terms of responsible pain, that is, giving it a characteristic of the subject experiencing it. The psychological analysis that the literature on penance has put in place to define the nature of contritional pain is explored, thus indicating to the penitent a path of sentimental education based on the control and use of passionate matter starting from the most painful passion, that is precisely pain. A broader, scientific analysis focuses on the pain of contrition, on the emotional dynamics that take place around that pain, and more generally on the relationships between sensitivity, affectivity, will and reason.
