None of the coups d’état that took place in Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s attracted as much international attention as the Chilean golpe of 11 September 1973. The fear of political and diplomatic isolation, as well as concerns for its economic impact, led the Chilean military Junta to actively engage in the defense of the country’s image abroad. The aim of this article is to assess the tools, messages, models and networks that were used by the military government to protect and improve its political reputation on the international stage.
