Women in prison show frailties which are even more increased if they are pregnant or are mothers of very young children. International studies show not only that the number of women in prison is lower than of men, but also that women in prison are more likely to get sick. This is because, in addition to being more exposed to certain diseases, they are also in a context in which health programs are designed and organized for men. The World Health Organization identifies four macro-categories of problems affecting women in prison, such as: mental health; suicidal acts; substance abuse; sexual and reproductive health.
