We object of these notes is the view of the Vatican painted by Donato Decumbertino in the Hall of the Masks of di Capua Castle in Gambatesa. We interest of painting is multifacedet, beyond the role it plays in the pictorial cycle dated 1550. So far it has been almost ignored by studies on the San Pietro site and the image of Rome. And because the author knows Vasari (in particular the Salone dei Cento Giorni of 1546) and the projects of Giuliano da Sangallo the Younger for the Vatican Basilica, which he represents under construction ignoring the novelties made by Michelangelo in the meantime.
