Smart home devices are increasingly bought by consumers. After an overview on which rulesinclude in their scope the use of these goods, the main focus is on data protection and consumerprotection. The utmost account is taken of the GDPR and the EU directives concerningbusiness-to-consumer digital contracts. Moreover, the article points out that national contractlaw, in particular national sales law, does not fit the purchase of smart home devices as theconcept of ownership is blurred by that one of access.
