20In 1860, a year after Milan was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia, a new statute of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts was founded, where two teachings appeared that did not exist before: "History of the new Italian country" and "History of art". The aim of this paper is to examine the purpose and the cultural context of that reform; the social and professional role and competences of teachers; the way they taught in the Academy; which kind of modern painting the new teaching could have initially influenced. All these events took place during the epoch-making transit from history painting to the history of painting.
