Looking at a landscape is already a way to own it? The “democracy of landscape” between global mobility, immigration and identity localisms. – The Western tradition of landscape appreciation has been based on the visual contemplation of the territory. But does gazing towards the landscape mean owning it as well? Does looking at a landscape involve a form of appropriation? Starting from an analysis of the complex relationship between the material components of a landscape and its multiple images and representations, this paper addresses the question of “owning” a landscape in the contemporary society. In doing so, it analyzes the increasing forms of mobility and fluidity in landscape appreciation and fruition, the risks of a new geographical “determinism” in the artificial separation between “good landscapes” and “bad landscapes”, the growing importance of “other” gazes brought about by immigrants and new citizens, and, finally, the processes of privatization and segregation that jeopardize the public accessibility to the landscape.
