The landscapes of citizenship. Geographical challenges of democracy between exclusion and inclusion. – This contribution deals with the theme “Democracy and landscape”, connecting it to the geographical challenges that will affect the relationship between human systems and environmental systems in the coming decades. Starting from the most critical scenarios, three landscapes are identified, and investigated in the international debate as to their relevance in the field of democracy and citizenship. These are vegetable gardens, and in particular urban gardens, cities, and digital spaces. The discussion aims to identify traces and signs in the landscape that can be interpreted in terms of the existence of democratic processes. The three landscapes are closely interrelated and in relation with one another at different geographical scales. They have to do with issues such as food security, social cohesion, and the links between places and resources. Ultimately, they can play a key role in the processes of inclusion and exclusion, which are at the very basis of democracy and citizenship.
