The artificial transmutation of elements, the artificial production of radioactive bodies, their possible use in medicine, the probable discovery of new chemical elements in addition to the ninety-two elements already known are the subjects of this article written by Enrico Fermi. Thanks to studies which he is currently conducting at the Physics Institute of the University of Rome and to contributions from his highly talented collaborators, Fermi is attracting worldwide attention to Italian scientific research on this topic, which has proved to be exceptionally important from every point of view.
