This brief article aims to investigate some aspects of an international conference held last November in Florence. In the year devoted to Giorgio Bassani, it was an occasion to address aspects of Jewish cultural data, with special reference to the reactions of writers in general and an individual in particular to the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust. The conference acknowledged the need to face up to harsh reality and search for an adequate historiographical, ethical and literary response.
