The essay analyses a short text about Thomas Hobbes and Baruch Spinoza written by Carl Schmitt in 1919. In this issue of «Filosofia Politica», the Italian translation of the text - transcribed from Schmitt's manuscripts and published in German by Piet Tommissen - is published for the first time. In his comment, Carlo Galli reconsiders Schmitt's reading both of Hobbes - which reflects the manifold transformations of Schmitt's thought along his career - and of Spinoza, who is regarded as the expression of the dark side of modernity, that is of Hobbes' political thought, whose weaknesses Spinoza continued and exacerbated.
