From its very beginnings the Institute of Physics of the University of Florence played a starring role on the stage of Italian Physics. It was particularly prominent in the evolution of the discipline from its 19th-century formulation up to the revolutionary issues of the early 20th century. The golden period was the twenty years following the First World War, when the names of the leading players included, among others, Fermi, Occhialini – father and son, Bernardini and Bruno Rossi, masterfully directed by Antonio Garbasso, the Director of the Institute. Over recent years various circumstances have led to the establishment of two documentary archives relating to Occhialini and Garbasso himself. The complete analysis of the material and its digitisation is currently under way, together with the creation of the related system for online consultation.
