This article re-constructs the interplay among European citizenship, free movement rights, and transnational access to social protection in the case law of the Court of Justice. The judicial discourse on European citizenship as a social integration device and a source for transnational solidarity is re-examined in the light of the Court's more recent case law. The author's argument is that the European crisis has accelerated the de-composition of the very idea of transnational social solidarity indubitably showing its inherent fragility and contradictions.
